Set Up IMAP - iPhone™, iPad™, iPod®

If you would like to learn more about the differences between POP and IMAP, please see the help topic, "POP vs. IMAP."

Steps are compatible with 4G and newer, as well as iPad 3 and newer.

To set up IMAP, do the following:

  1. Tap Settings  Mail, Contacts, Calendars  Add Account  Tap Other and then Add Mail Account.

  2. Enter the following information in the spaces provided:
  • Name—Enter your first and last name. This is the name that will appear in the From field of messages you send.
  • Address—Enter your entire email address (e.g.,
  • Password—Enter the password for your email account.
  • Description—Enter a descriptive name for the account (e.g., Work Account). This description will be visible only to you, from your phone.
  1. Tap the Next button.

Note: If IMAP is not already selected, tap the IMAP button.

  1. Under both the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server sections, enter the following information:
  • Host Name—Enter the secure server name:
  • User Name—Enter your entire email address (e.g.,
  • Password—Enter the password for your email account.

Server addresses.

  1. Tap the Next button. The device will verify settings. Tap Save to add the account. From there, you'll be taken back to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars page.

 Configure Default Settings & Folders

  1. Tap Settings → Mail, Contacts, Calendars → Under the Accounts section, select the email address you're trying to set up.
  2. You'll see a screen that has the name of that email address at the top, then you should see an IMAP section with your account and an arrow next to it. Tap on the arrow to the taken to the Account page.



  1. Under Outgoing Mail Server, tap SMTP > Then tap Primary Server.
  2. From here, you'll need to make sure all of the necessary information is entered correctly.
  3. Make sure the Use SSL is switched to ON.
  4. Switch Authentication to Password.
  5. And change Server Port to 465, then tap Done.


  1. Once your device saves that information, hit the Account button in the top left to return to the Account Settings page.
  2. Under the Outgoing Mail Server section, tap the Advanced → button.
  3. Set your Deleted Mailbox to Deleted Messages.


  1. Scroll down to set your Incoming Settings.
  2. Set Use SSL to OFF → Authentication to Password → and for Server Port, enter 143.
  3. It should take your device a moment to verify those settings.


  1. Tap the Account button once again to save settings, and then tap Done.
